Dear Premier:
Re: Bill 111
Please be advised that Niagara Falls City Council recently passed Resolution 2006-11, endorsing
Bill 111, Workplace Safety and Insurance Amendment Act (Bob Shaw), 2006.
As you are undoubtedly aware, the proposed amendments to the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act,
if approved, will create presumptive legislation that changes the onus so that the WSIB board would
have to prove a firefighters' disease or condition was not contracted at work. Similar legislation has
been enacted in other jurisdictions.
Niagara Falls City Council is aware that the Ministry of Labour is undertaking a comprehensive
review of the treatment offirefighter cancer claims. Nonetheless, our Council would encourage the
Provincial Government to take action that will ensure that firefighters and their families receive fair
and timely compensation for illness or disease attributable to their work in the line of duty.
Your consideration of the attached resolution is respectfully respected.
