October is Autism Awareness Month in Canada. We request your support in
recognizing it as such and assisting with autism awareness.
It is currently recognized that 1 in 120 individuals are being diagnosed with
Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD. This rate suggests that in the town of Niagara
Falls, 685 individuals are living with ASD.
Over 121 families from Niagara Falls have accessed our organization for support.
We hope to increase awareness of our services so we can provide assistance
and support to those who wish to connect with us.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
is a complex neurological disorder that is characterized by impairments in
communication & social interaction, and by repetitive & stereotypical patterns of
behaviour, interests and activities. Symptoms range from mild to severe.
With appropriate early and ongoing intervention, many of the associated
behaviours can be positively changed.
A child with autism becomes an adult with autism. Support, services and
understanding is a life long process.
Autism Ontario is the leading source of information and referral on autism and
one of the largest collective voices representing the autism community. Autism
Ontario is dedicated to increasing public awareness about autism and the day -to
day issues faced by individuals with autism, their families and the professionals
with whom they interact.
The Niagara Chapter receives on average three calls per week from families with
a new diagnosis. This past year our records indicate that
• There has been a 30% increase in new families
• 29% of those with ASD at our chapter are between the ages of 13 and 19
• The number of adults has increased 7%
Our Chapter
• Sends e-news or newsletters to over 850 families, friends and
professionals
• Has a library that offers over 800 books, videos, CDs, etc
• Provides over 200 spaces for: summer camp, social /recreational
programs, lifeskills programs, teen programs and siblings programs.
These spaces averaging over $700 with families paying 25% of this cost
• Has an Ontario Camping Association accredited Summer Camp
• Collaborates with other autism service providers to bring added value to
individuals and families
• Is one of 8 chapters in Ontario that hosts a Realize Community Potential
program whose focus is providing added support for families
The Realize Community Potential Program has, for the last 3 '/2 years, provided
added support and services to families in Niagara. Autism Ontario has partnered
with the Niagara Chapter who hosts and supporting the facilitation of this
program. This Autism Ontario program is funded by the Ministry of Child & Youth
Services. The focus for the program is to provide workshops, social learning
opportunities and family consultation.
We want to see all individuals with ASD given a solid start as they face a
challenging world by providing them with the resources that will build a
foundation for the rest of their lives.
On behalf of Autism Ontario — Niagara, I would like to extend an invitation to
Mayor Ted Salci, council and the Niagara Falls community to attend our Open
House at our new location on Friday Oct 1 and 2 The official ribbon cutting is
on Friday, however, we are extending the Open House into Saturday so that all
interested parties can visit the facility.
For several years we anxiously awaited a facility that would allow us to enhance
and grow the programs and services we offer to families living with Autism in
Niagara.
With community support directed to this move, we now find ourselves at
Goodwill's Stoke Community Village at 36 Page Street in St. Catharines, a
revitalized brown space, originally a factory. In addition to affordable office space
we benefit from the use of common space for our program and services. We
look forward to all the possibilities that will come with this move.
The Chapter could not provide all the services and supports they do without
volunteers. This past year over 150 volunteers have given over 2,900 hours to
the Chapter
Having said that, financial support from the community is crucial to meeting the
needs of the growing number of families that look to us for programs and
services. The chapter is grateful for the generous support from individuals,
organizations, grants and events.
We will be celebrating both our volunteers and our donors at our Open House.
