Date: 3/18/2011 7:05 PM Subject: Council report - Merge of Recreation and Arts & Culture Hello everyone I am saddened to see the above report that is going to council on Monday night. These two committees could not be more different. Both serve our community well but in entirely different aspects. I am only finding out about the recommendation now so time is of the essence. I have been a member of the Recreation Committee (it was once Recreation Commission) since 1998 and sat as chair 1999 -2001. Over these 13 years, I feel the committee provided a real liaison between our recreation groups and the Parks and Recreation Department. Sometimes doing our own fund raising to start funds like ALIVE. Our current chair, Mick Wolfe, worked tirelessly in selling naming rights for the Gale Centre as well as selling seats. Councilors Pietrangelo and Gates both served on the Recreation Commission, as did Mayor Diodati. I am sure they can relate to its importance. An importance that has increased over the years as budgets get tighter. I know Arts & Culture has done great things also. I hope council can see fit to defeat this proposal or at least defer it until we have a chance to plead our case. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns. I am greatful for the work of the recreation comm. and do enjoy it when our paths cross on Volunteer Recognition Night, but that is the ONLY times our paths cross. Anyone that knows the arts community, knows they are a "horse of a different colour" and can, in no way, be pidgeon holed let alone be waylayed into the sports genre. In order to do the best thing for the arts community the Arts & Culture comm. HAS to be a stand alone comm. It would have been nice to have been asked for our opinion. Thank you for your email.
