As you are undoubtedly aware, the proposed amendments to the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act, if approved, will create presumptive legislation that changes the onus so that the WSIB board would have to prove a firefighters' disease or condition was not contracted at work. Similar legislation has been enacted in other jurisdictions. Niagara Falls City Council is aware that the Ministry of Labour is undertaking a comprehensive review of the treatment offirefighter cancer claims. Nonetheless, our Council would encourage the Provincial Government to take action that will ensure that firefighters and their families receive fair and timely compensation for illness or disease attributable to their work in the line of duty.
