2008/02/11 (2) ~~i i ~.a _ .i, The City of Nia ara Falls, Ontario g Resolution February 11, 2008 No. 03 Moved by Councillor Pietrangelo Seconded by Councillor Diodati WHEREAS the Corporation of the City of Niagara Falls employs School Crossing Guards at various identified crossings throughout the municipality; and WHEREAS the Corporation is committed to ensuring the safety of any individual, especially school children and crossing guards, at these crossings; and WHEREAS at certain crossings in the City, there have been several vehicles that have not followed the guard's direction and have travelled through the crossing while children were on the road; and WHEREAS although the Province recently increased driver failure to yield to pedestrian offenses to $150, these have not been enough of a deterrent. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Province consider increasing fines for failure to yield to crossing guards to possibly as much as $500 to act as a true deterrent and preserve the safety of our school children and crossing guards; and FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that this resolution be forwarded to the Honourable Jim Bradley, Minister of Transportation, Kim Craitor, M.P.P. and the Ontario Traffic Conference; and FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Niagara Regional Police continue to target problematic crossings in our community, such as at Thorold Stone Road and St. James Avenue.
